Beogram 4002 (5524): A New Arrival from South Korea

I recently received a Beogram 4002 (Type 5524, with input voltage selector) from a customer in South Korea for a full restoration. This post gives a first assessment of the unit. A follow up post will describe the restoration work I did in detail.

This is the unit as received:

Sadly, it got a bit damaged during shipping. It was not double boxed. Luckily, only the hood got hit and the plinth survived intact:

This shows the unit without hood. At this point I do not know how to remove the tape. It is very sticky, while easily disintegrating:

Also on one side the tape was applied directly to the wood frame...we will see if this can be removed without damage:

On the positive, the keypad is in almost pristine condition:

And the plinth corners are also very nice:

I removed the panels and the platter and had a look below deck:

It looks original, a great starting point for a successful restoration. Someone really tightened the chassis springs:

Luckily, they did not seem to get damaged from this. When I released them they found their original shape.

I switched the unit to 110V and plugged it in. I pressed start and the carriage started moving and the solenoid tried to engage at the LP setdown point while the platter motor came alive with a loud rattle. All good signs! Stay tuned for my restoration report!
